Crank but no start (Page 1/1)

I just got a 1986 GT with the V6. It cranks but doesn’t start. I wasn’t getting fuel pressure and I didn’t hear the pump, so I replaced the pump. With the pump not wired up yet, I sprayed starting fluid into the throttle body while cranking but still nothing. I’m assuming a bad distributor or cam sensor. Can anyone help me! This car deserves to be on the road.

Are you getting spark to the plugs? If not, check the ignition control module under the distributor and the coil. Same thing happened to my '86 GT. I replaced the ICM, coil, and distributor & wires to fix the problem. Start with the ICM and go from there.

I’m getting air, compression, spark, and fuel (the starting fluid). Everything checks out, but it’s still not starting. I was told it may have a stuck valve, but that wouldn’t prevent it from just starting, would it?

Is it firing at all? Have you checked all the plugs and wires? What makes you think there's a stuck valve? Do you know what the compression is in all cylinders? Having low compression could make starting difficult.

I'd try completing you fuel pump replacement then try again. If you have air, compression, spark and fuel it should start. I'm not sure trying to start it only on starting fluid would be enough unless everything else was O.K.

FWIW, if you can't get it to start after checking these things you may want to check with the Georgia Fiero Club in Atlanta since you are in Georgia. Maybe there's someone close by that could help.

The timing was off at the distributor and it finally fired on starting fluid. I have a new cap and rotor ready to be put in and all the normal fluid changes. Thank you
