Headlights stay in up/open positions (Page 1/1)

Hi Guys
Need your help one more time. My 85 headlights are stuck/stay in the up/open position. However I am able to turn the headlights off and on, but in either case they stay in the up position.
btw...the dash/parking/running light are out too.

The only wiring common to both headlight motors is the ground. Maybe you lost that.

Sounds like a power problem or the isolation relay may be burned out. Test the motors by applying power directly and go from there.

I have had issues with lights going up or down and it was caused by the light switch, but as Dennis points out, an isolation switch can also be the cause.

Be careful when applying power directly to the motor. I have blown limiter switches by doing that. Limiter switches are very hard to come by.

The switch is a likely suspect. Over time, the metal tabs inside bend and loose contact. It's easy to bend them back if you work carefully.

Did you get your problem solved?

If its not the light switch (good suggestion to check) I believe that exercising caution when applying power directly to the motors is best but I would only do it while the leads are disconnected from the relays and on the bench. Perhaps apply just enough duration of 12V power to move the motors a little each way. If you go too far the Gen 1 motors have a circuit breaker on the limit switches (the little glass bulb thingy) so in theory it should be a safe procedure.
