Will a commercial drive thru undercarage car wash harm an '87 2.8 alternator ?

I've driven my 86 and 87 through that type car wash and haven't had any problems. If you're really concerned, once the rear wheels near the underspray, accelerate through it quickly.

While seems good easy way to remove salt etc on bottom of car...

Very likely, Yes. Many under car spay units have enough pressure to reach many low mounted parts not just V6 alt's.
Like driving thru deep water plus doing that can cause other problems besides you stall and even destroy the car.

Pressure Washer Spray has "soap" can be bad by itself but often only loosen crap on engine parts and in alt's case the "soap" and loose crap can get inside of it and attack bearings, slip rings, etc. Is likely conductive and "shorts out" parts too.

Spraying engine from top have cause many problems including can't start or drive for hours, days or longer. Worse when spray head is close to whatever so have enough force to push "water" inside of electrical connectors etc. Weather Pack and newer types of connectors can't seal out "water" w/ pressure behind it. If the car will run after spraying the "water" can stay and rot connector pins and kill the car days to months later.
