Fuel and temp gauges inop... (Page 1/1)

Wife's "new" '86 2M4 - since we bought it a month ago, the fuel level and engine temp gauges have failed to register anything. After driving it home from getting an alignment, I checked the senders for the ECM and gauge, and they both showed resistance. I have not checked them for ground or positive voltage, but that's next before I pull the instrument panel apart or drop the fuel tank. Or chase the C500 connector. Anyone experience and solve these issues, either apart or together? Any/all input, yada yada... TIA -Chris

Since both gages are inoperative, I would check the gage to cluster connection.

The metal clips that provide connection between the flexible circuit contact pads and the gage contacts (threaded posts) are likely the problem.

Check that the pad has not been 'squashed' under the clip ears, and burnish the copper pads with a soft pencil eraser.

Also check the contact 'fingers' at the harness plug recepticles. They sometimes delaminate from the flexible circuit board or corrode.
