Which 2.8 in my GT? (Page 1/1)

When I bought my '86 GT, I was told it had a little rod knock. Bought it anyway. The "little" turned out to be greater than I thought. #4 journal on the crank is such that the biggest undersize rod bearing (1.00 mm) doesn't even touch the Plastigage. SO, I'm shopping for a fresh crankshaft. My part-time employer/FLAPS lists two different main bearing diameters for replacement cranks for the '86 2.8, and lists different casting numbers which I assume are for the crankshafts. My question: is there any way to tell which diameter mains I have, and therefore which replacement crankshaft I need, without removing the oil pan? Maybe a block casting number also identifies the crank? I mean, yeah, the pan is going to have to come off anyway, I would just like to do it later rather than sooner... Any/all input, you know the rest. Thanks in advance - Chris

This may help....or maybe not.

Thanks, Gall757. Hopefully my tablet at home will let me see the images in that post; work computer blocks such things. I'm hoping there will be information that will allow me to identify the crank without pulling the pan. I'm a little skeptical, though...

Judging by the note at the bottom of the first page, since my GT is an '86, it should have the second-design, big-journal and bigger oil galley crank. I'm anxious now to get the cradle bushings done on the wife's car and get mine back in to confirm. More as it happens... - Chris
