split Getrag case: detent assembly (Page 1/1)

I'm having a heck of a time removing the black cover to get at it, anybody have a trick they have used or suggestion?

Is the part still available in case I ruin it?

I was able to use a small flat blade screwdriver. It takes patience... work your way around, a little at a time. If you're careful, you won't damage the cap.

There's a hole in the metal right in the center. Stab a long screwdriver through that, then pry. You'll lift the cover right out. When you're ready to reassemble, hammer the cover flat, seal the stab wound with RTV and reinstall.

By "Pry" I mean push the screwdriver all the way through. Ideally, you want the tip of the screwdriver on the detent block underneath the cover so that the shaft of the screwdriver is lifting as straight up as possible on the cover.

is there any difference between 1988 and previous years?
Mine seems to be real tight, I used a putty knife to pry/cut all the way around and it is extremely tight
I think I have cut all the way down to metal, the putty knife goes down about 1/16th inch
getting frustrated, and I glanced at my Dremel a couple times
hope it doesn't come to that

Like I said, poke a hole in the middle and pry it out.

Have you seen pics or video of what the detent block under it looks like?

yeah I saw that video, thanks for posting
I finally got it done, I notice in the Getrag manual it says to punch a hole in the center, which is what I did but still could';t get it out so I made two slices with Dremel and peeled the metal back so I could get a crow bar in
and bought a new one
for whatever reason mine was very tight, maybe it's just the cold here
