What's the secret to keeping the seal under the rear window in place? (Page 1/2)
Boozeman NOV 23, 04:26 PM
Replaced mine after finding one side of the previous one had come loose and dropped down on my exhaust manifold. Got the new one from the Fiero Store, soaked it in warm water, installed it and cut to length. Every time I drive the car, I'll pop the rear deck to find that the seal is pushing back out in areas. Is there some trick to keeping this thing in place?

I've had Fieros for 25 years and I have no idea what you're referring to?

A few (or more) dabs of weatherstrip adhesive spaced along the length of the seal and near the ends will secure it.

Don't over-use it!

That was part of a recall and GM removed it completely in '88. It was a bad idea. A rubber extrusion that trapped water until you opened the rear deck. Then the water would fall directly on the exhaust manifold and crack it. To the OP: Do yourself a favor and throw it away.

Oh... the recall weatherstrip at the front of the decklid! I didn't know what the heck the OP was referring to... "the seal under the rear window".

This decklid weatherstripping was different in '84... which is why it's important for people to mention the year of Fiero they're asking about.

I interpret the seal OP refers to as the rubber molding which is pressed into the groove created by the rear glass and a lip on the spaceframe:

If my understanding is correct, then I agree wih olejoedad's suggestion to use weatherstrip adhesive (the kind that smells like aromatic hydrocarbons) sparingly.

I agree with Joe and PMB. Its similwr to the windshield reveal molding and the headliner sunroof trim. I have the same problem with my 86.

People buy the strip because recall removal Cause more problems then whatever was supposed to fix.
Maybe the OE strip causes clearance problems w/ recall installed "heat shield" on front E-manifold on V6.

Rain water etc on lid will run off when lid is open with and w/o this.
Remove and park or drive nose down now can dump more water on hot exhaust.

Removal Allow a lot more crap on lid finding a easy way to the engine too.
V6 front spark plugs can rust more if pockets get full of crap.

L4 have same problem but head is moved back so less of this issue. Even still #1 plug shell can rust more With the edge strip because near unsealed gap where lid clears right vent and the vent itself lets water and crap to attack #1 very easy. This is why I use better plugs w/ nickle plated shells.

As for TFS edge strip... w/o seeing one can't guess exactly what is wrong. Might have lid damage when OE part was removes, Might need better "glue," or aftermarket part made w/ problems and any "glue" may not help for long.

Many years ago someone made a flex "gutter" edge seal that opens to stop most of water dumping. Only thing is to watch leaves etc can't build up and rot and wreck it.

Would certainly help if people would perhaps post a picture of what they're referring to.

I've never ever paid much attention to "the seal under the rear window" as none of my Fieros has ever had a problem with theirs.

It was pretty obvious to me that the "seal under the rear window" was the seal under the rear window, and not the seal attached to the front lip of the decklid.

Reading comprehension is a good thing.
