Headlight motors keep going after getting all the way up (Page 1/2)

I have a 1986 Fiero SE with the 2.8 V6, and my dad and I are Gen 2 swapping the headlights. when I put them up, the motor for the left headlight keeps going for 3-4 seconds after it is all the way up. Anybody know what the problem is?

Generation 2 motors will do that under 3 conditions. The bump stops inside have deteriorated, the teeth on the gear have stripped, or the gear has come loose from the lift shaft. The bump stop problem and stripped gear problem are easily fixed. If the gear has come loose from the lift shaft, the best remedy is to replace it or just buy a new motor. They are available from most auto parts stores and Rock Auto. Some report they have drilled and pinned the gear to the shaft. Some with good results, others not so good. Gear kits are available from RodneyDickman.com

The 84-86 Fiero headlight motor system is a complex system of relays and switches. The motors themselves have the up and down switch function built into them but the most common problem is that the dowels in the motor gears have deteriorated and this is causing the up stop position not to hit the limit switch. The gears may also be stripped. If those motors are original it is likely those motors need a rebuild. If you wish to view what the repair process is, look for the repair videos on You Tube. The good news is that repair parts are available. A person with decent mechanical skills can repair them but if you are not mechanically inclined (it can be tricky) fierofool on this forum offers a rebuild service and he has good reviews.

I think it might be the gear disconnecting from the lift shaft, but here's the thing:

It still goes up and down just fine, but the motor still spins for a few seconds after finishing travel. i don't hear the usual grinding sound i heard when my gen 1's stripped out, just the sound of the motor, so i think the gear disconnects, but the motor still spins.
(I'm sorry if I sound like an idiot, I'm 15 so I only know basic and some moderate level mechanics.)

(we did get the headlights and wiring harness off a clunker though)

If you have not opened up the Gen 2 motors to look at the clutch rollers (bump stops), you need to do that.

As Gall posted above me, look at the images in that thread. More than likely the rollers are failing. They act as a safety clutch and when worn, they slip and the motor continues to run. Here are replacements:

$10 for both headlight bushings and he offers the kit with gaskets also.

By the way, it's nice to see someone so young who is interested in these cars along with their dad. Be sure to post pictures.

We are all here to share in the open exchange of ideas and opinions. I sincerely doubt if anyone here would think about you that way for just asking a question . We are here to help so always feel free to ask. After 20 years on this forum I'm still asking questions myself.

Thank you guys, I will be taking the motor apart and replacing those in a few days, and will post pictures.

By the way, where can you buy rubber bushings for the condenser? (where it bolts to the car) Mine are shot and broken in two.

Are you talking about the A/C condenser? If so, those are called well-nuts. They have the nut captured in the rubber bushing and when you tighten the bolt or screw, they compress the bushing against the hole holding the condenser in place. You should be able to get them at any good auto-parts store or you can find them on-line by googling "well-nut".

Welcome to the Fiero World.

Try to only take apart the area with the gear, not the entire motor.
