Alternator replacement recomendations (Page 1/2)
robmorais NOV 25, 04:31 PM
I need to replace my Alternator. I have the 2.8 V6. Any tips on how to do it easily? Looks like a tight fit... Any recommendations - either for brands, places to buy them or upgrades that I can use.

thanks!

See my Cave, Rabid-Wombat's CS-130 Conversion for 85-87 V6.

With the lack of information provided in the first post, the OP may indeed already have that style alternator.

Replacing the alternator is a PITA job especially if its on an automatic. I did this job only once and I removed it from the right wheel house. IIRC, I had to disconnect both the alternator and the mounting bracket to get it removed. Its probably an easier job with the stick transmission. The C130 alternator is a better replacement but unless you have an 88 Fiero it requires some rewiring.

This is the way to go! Great guide to the CS conversion for pre ‘88 2.8L.

OP has a manual trans 86:

Therefore, he has the 12SI alternator.

I think the wheel and wheelwell liner can remain in place; with a standard trans the work can be performed from below. The alternator drops out the bottom, turning the unit as necessary to get it out.

The aluminium mounting bracket can remain in place.

This info goes back a few years (2012) but may be a place for you to start your search for a new alternator. These are the parts I used and only parts you will need if you follow Wambats conversion guide. This alternator provides a power (amps) increase over the OEM alt and will more than take care of the power needs of a stock Fiero.

It’s a fairly easy job to do. Don’t fret over getting the old alt out of the new one in. Since you have a manual trans there will be plenty of room to work.

New CS-130, 105amp alternator (DL 1352-5-7, AutoZone), module plug 3-wire (Dorman 85954, O’Reilly’s).

Funny, I have done this job 4 times now (both my Fiero’s are GT autos) so to me it’s not too bad. I have a system down of how I do it so no surprises. I have upgraded both my cars to nd 88 CS130 and bonus is it’s physically a little smaller.
Here’s my tip on getting the alternator back in a little easier: The new alternator gets inserted first into its mounting spot but i let it rest loosely on the lower left area cradle area, then I snake in the alternator bracket, install the bracket bolts just hand tight, then situate the alternator into the bracket and run the two bolts through it, the long top one first, then the bottom shorter one.
