Fuel pump polarity/testing (Page 1/1)

Hello, this is about an 84 fiero's fuel pump. The new one i got with the car it looks like I will have to splice the wires to the fuel pump onto, so I am wondering if there is a way to test the polarity to make sure it is pumping the right way and functioning correctly before I install it and the fuel tank again, as it was a huge pain to remove for a newbie. Any suggestions?

I'm not sure about the 84's but I don't think any pump should need splicing. They should all have connectors. I'll let someone else chime in on this.

It is this kind of deal, the black and white wires I believe are supposed to splice onto the black and black original wires of the fuel pump, as I understand it.

Here is what the final result looks like, you can see the plastic bits covering where the wires were spliced.

Interesting. I always thought you simply unplug the old one and reuse the same connector. Is the connector different with the one you replaced?

Yeah, I thought that weird too but it seems like besides a few much more expensive options this is what is available.

Here is what the current connection looks like

That picture of the old one doesn’t look like a normal fiero fuel pump or connector to me? It might just be the angles?

Could be, here is another picture. They might have changed the fuel pump arrangement for the later years, there are a lot of things different from the '84 and later models, especially in the electric arrangements. This one had been sitting for 23 years, so I doubt it would be an aftermarket part.

Short hose comes w/ new pumps are often wrong type.
Need SAE 30R10 immersible hose to last long, more so in areas require E10 gas that is really at or close to 10% ethanol.

Can test a pump but Do Not allow pump to run dry.
Gas is coolant and lube to them and quickly have problems or kill outright w/o gas flowing thru it.
