TACH READS ABOUT THREE TIMES WHAT IT SHOULD (Page 1/1)
eti engineer DEC 01, 10:06 AM
Gents,

I forgot to ask one thing. My tach reads about three times what my actual engine rpms are. I replaced the tach filter, but it didn't make a difference. What else could be causing this? I am trying to think what would cause the tach to receive three times the number of pulses it would normally get, or what would make the tach think that that's what is happening. BTW, I replaced the tach filter already...

Thanks...

Could the tachometer needle have slipped on the gauge shaft? Its also possible that the tach filter has dried out over time and is not functioning properly. Is this for a stock Fiero?

Yes. The tach needle seems to be correct. I replaced the tach filter and the results didn't change.

Likely Tach board has problems
loose/dirty connections in the dash can mess w/ tach and other gauges.
has caps and maybe resistor that "dies" and doesn't displays right often reading high to very high. Can try fixing but best is to get new board.

Same thing happened on my 1986 SE over the years, it currently idles at 6000!

Thanks for the input. I will check all this out, once I get an engine back in my car. Working on doing that right now.

If you get to the bottom of your problem, please PM me and let me know what you found, and if I get to mine first, I will do the same for you. Have a good day at 6000 rpm...
