Where to get staggered wheels? (Got coilovers) (Page 1/2)
Squall86GT DEC 17, 07:19 PM
I’ve looked through tire rack at Lankes and talked with them and so forth. Where are people finding staggered wheels? I have coil overs on the rear and would like to get to 65 or 275’s are 285 back there. Where should I go look? Tire rack doesn’t really have any options for wheels.
Thanks

Specifically, I’m looking for black wheels with the machined metal rims (outer circles) that are 17 inch and wide enough to put 275s on

How wide can the front wheels be on an 86?

You should try shopping for tires at the same time as you shop for wheels.

You'll find that tires wider than 255 in the 17 inch diameter are unobtainium. In 18 inch and up you'll be able to get into the wider widths.

Don't purchase wheels without knowing what tires you'll be able to get for them...

If possible, I suggest relaxing your requirements for appearance. Suitable staggered wheels are few and far between.

A couple of things; Keeping the wheel/tire package as light as possible pays big dividends- 40 lbs off the wheel & tire package will equal 200 lbs + off the chassis....I bought new tires & wheels for mine (6 lbs light each up front, 3 lbs lighter each rear) and if felt like a whole new car. Not only better performance (in Acceleration, braking AND handling) but much better feel thru the controls- it rode better too!

A 2017 Corvette Grand Sport w/Z07 option has 285 mm front and 335 mm rear tires...But my Fiero weighs 2600 vs the Vette's weight at 3600.......That is a ratio of 1.4 to 1, which means my 2600 lb Fiero would have equal tire patch vs weight at 205 mm up front and 245 in the rear (Approx) (A 2700 lb Fiero would still only be up to 215 front and 255 rear tire widths)

I was crazy for really wide tires when I was younger but now want something that A) fits well, B) looks good and C) doesn't cost two arms and one leg (I'm running out of those!)

Strangely, I have gone on Tirerack and looked at Fiero wheels and found very limited availability, but when I punched in 2005 WRX it came up with all sorts of wider wheels...Yes, these wheels tend to have more positive offset- but that can be beneficial up front to reduce scrub radius, and spacers can take care of the rear. The Subarus have a slightly smaller center bore- but most of these after-market wheels use a hub centric ring- you can buy those in all different sizes to adapt the aftermarket wheel to the Fiero- just check that center bore first.

The original 15" GT wheels had an offset of 30 mm....I have wheels with 38 mm offset and they work great- less scrub radius for less kickback thru the steering wheel...The subaru wheels come with approx' 45 mm offset- that is even better but you need to do some measuring with your wider tires (Whatever you pick) 8 mm = 5/16"....15 mm = 9/16"

I have found the Subaru offset to be just about perfect for the front of an 88.
But be careful, using factory (as opposed to aftermarket) Subaru wheels. The Subie came with a 56.1mm centerbore. They will need to be enlarged 1 mm to bolt on a Fiero.

For the rear of the 88, or all four corners of the 84-87, search for the first generation of the VW "new Beetle". They are also 5x100, with a 57.1mm centerbore, and ~35mm offset.
Most anything you can find, within reason, will bolt up with no drama, and will look great.

For 88s, the real trick is finding matching Subie wheels for the front and VW wheels for the rear.

Thanks Guys. Really helpful. I think I found some. Before I buy them- see any problem with this set?

They would stick out a little more but seems like it might look slightly better. Don’t want them to look hillbilly though

Will 8 1/2 inch wide wheels work on the front with 35 inch offset?
