VSS Troubleshooting - plastic gears (Page 1/1)

Howdy All,
I'm just trying to get my speedometer and odometer working. If I hook a multimeter up to the VSS out of the car and spin the shaft, it will show pulses being produced. However, if I jack up the car with the VSS installed and spin the wheel, no reading is indicated. The plastic gear on the VSS looks no good, so I'm going to try to find a place to buy a new one. The Fiero Store does not have the one I need (red). I was thinking of trying to call GM dealerships. Could it also be that the gear on the transmission side needs to be replaced? If so, how do I do that? Or how do I even check if it is good? Thanks guys. Loving the Fiero so far.

Rodney has the transmission speedo gear for the Getrag 5-speed if that's what you need.
But the transmission needs to be removed and dismantled to replace it.

Oh no! I hope I dont have to remove mine. I guess I'll drain my fluid and see if I can get a good look at that gear on the transmission side.

I would venture to say that the gear that most often wears is the nylon Vss gear. Replace it and see what results.

That internal gear should be OK. Find a red gear and hope for the best.... You can ask in the MALL for a good used one.

FYI, if you jack up both rear wheels and spin one wheel by hand, you will likely spin the wheel on the other side backwards. If this is happening, then you are just spinning the spider gears and the differential carrier that the vss gear is attached to is not spinning and you won't see any pulses.

If you want to spin the rear diff to check the VSS signal, put the transmission in neutral and leave 1 of the rear tires on the ground. Then when you spin the elevated tire, you will also be spinning the differential carrier

I'll put a new one on and see how it goes. Just gotta find one first.
