Recommendations for new axle right side 5 speed (Page 1/2)
cvxjet JAN 22, 03:10 PM
I am getting some noise out of my right (Passenger side) axle....Already replaced the bearing so that was not it.

I was going to buy the Detroit Axle 102D_AX one, but after checking it shows on their site as 24 inches and I called and checked- they have absolutely nothing that is 39-40 inches long.

Anyone have suggestions for a good replacement? Don't want cheap crap.......

Thanks for any help!

Have you checked rockauto? Are you sure the axle is making noise? You can also take it apart to look at it.

Eric,
I e-mailed you the other day? I suppose we missed each otheršŸ§. I will be in the Bay Area. Are you going to be around? Let me know, if and when, a good time for me to say ā€˜Hiā€™?

On Rockauto I am only seeing Cardone (Rebuilt), GSP and Trakmotive brands.......Noting that sounds particularly "Quality" Anyone have opinions/experience with those brands? Or any other suggestions?

Have used Cardone with success. They are rebuilt GM axles and strong. The Chinese imports like most if not all new brands are junk. A guy that I know snapped one in half but he did have an engine swap. Nothing like old GM steel.

Due to time constraints I recently had a friend's shop replace my right axle (instead of doing it myself). I'm waiting for a call back to find out what brand he installed.

What kind of noises are you hearing? I'm not questioning your automotive knowledge, and I know that things can fail in different ways. A few weeks ago, the inner joint failed on my right axle. Seemed unusual to me that a joint that gets very little articulation could come apart...it was a Cardone unit that I installed approx. 25k miles ago. My originals had well over 200k on them and I only replaced them "just because" when I was replacing axle seals. Before this axle failed, I never heard the usual CV joint clunks and in fact, less than 200 miles ago when changing the oil the axle boots were soft and not showing any cracks.

At that time, I had posted on here because I thought there might be too much up and down movement of the axle at the trans. Looks like that was normal tho for a Getrag.

Right now Rockauto has a Cardone 60118 rear right CV axle for a manual transmission 85-88 Fiero for sale: $53.79 plus a $13 core charge. It's under the "Economy" section, but I've found that Rockauto isn't really always up on what's Economy, what's Daily Driver, and what's Premium.

Well......You probably SHOULD question my auto-moe-tative K-now-ledge...

I must admit that I am not sure what this sound is, but I have replaced the strut, checked all of the (Recently replaced) bushings, replaced the bearing and even checked all of the body parts. Not sure if this is the axle.....It is very frustrating to not be able to locate the sound...(I guess I could run alongside with a hose trying to stethoscope it but my athletic abilities are kind of waning.....)

I was just rolling in a parking lot (Out of gear) and it was making a clunk/clink noise as it rolled over slight bumps and depressions- This is the most I have heard of this (Meaning it may be getting louder/looser-er....)

Just to prove I am not a complete whack-job, I do NOT hear the sounds when I am out of the car........(I hear other things tho!)

If it were me I would pull the axle and take it all apart. That is free. From there determine if you need to replace it or just renew it.
