Considering engine / trans swap... start with manual vs auto? (Page 1/1)

So, I’m tossing around the idea of getting a car to do an engine / trans swap. I’m thinking either an LS or a K swap. Either way I’ll be using an appropriate 5 speed manual transmission.
Obviously starting with a 5 speed fiero would be ideal, but if I found a good enough deal on an automatic fiero would that be a good route to go? I’d be replacing the engine, trans, ecm, wiring harness anyways. Off the top of my head, I’d have to source a third pedal, shifter, cables.
I’ve read threads about guys going from auto to manual on their fiero using the getrag trans etc, but since I’d be replacing a lot of the fiero drive train anyways, I’m wondering if starting with an auto would be a viable option.
Thoughts?

Not just the 3rd pedal and associated hardware, but the brake pedal too. The automatic Fieros have an extra-wide brake pedal. You need a clutch line too, clutch master cylinder. Shift boot, knob, etc... If you search the forum, you'll come up with the complete parts list.

This manual trans hardware can come from any Fiero with a manual transmission. It doesn't have to be from a 5-speed (Getrag 282 or Isuzu), it can be from a 4-speed (Muncie) as well.

Overall I would say buy the cleanest rust-free Fiero you can find. The automatic transmission is a relatively minor issue that can be easily corrected.

If you can find a standard Fiero in a you-pull-it yard, you'll be golden.

Also need the clutch master and slave, hydraulic line, clutch safety switch & c/c switch for the clutch pedal, as well as some wiring changes under the dash.

Find a manual car.
