F23 - Mock up question (Page 1/1)

Hello folks

I would like to get an F23 to replace my Getrag on my 3800 SC motor. My car is an 88

Will likely hold my breath and order WCF mounts, since nobody else seems to be making them, and will also grab an FY1 trans for the better gear ratio

Would like to do a mockup/ test fit before taking my car off the road, but it is hard to find a usable 88 cradle around here

My question is, would an 84-87 cradle work fine for mounting the F23 to test out fit, mounts, brackets? Is it necessary to also install axles for a test fit, or can I just use the cradle with existing Fiero trans mounts to test the bracket.

Or is it safer to try and find an 88 cradle to do this?

thanks

From what I remember, all chassis use the same engine and trans mounts, but, the toe link mount on the 84-87 overhangs the rear trans mount, on an 88, this overhang isn't there. That overhang also prevents Thelin's rear transmission mount from fitting an 84-87 without cutting the car, or the mount. Personally, I would hold out for an 88 cradle and know that everything is exactly like it should be.

In my F23 swap we didn't need to cut the car (to my recollection). There was some clearance done on the passenger side frame rail, but I think that was more for plumbing clearance, not because of the transmission mounts. This was in an '86. It was also bolted up to a SBC, I don't think it changed things, it was using the stock Fiero axles.

My build thread has a bunch of pictures, measurements and info, thanks to FieroGuru (before he worked on it, pictures are gone because of the service they were hosted on is long gone, sadly).

good info, thanks

My stuff from WCF arrived, looks to be good quality. Unfortunately they forgot to amend the shipping invoice to make it more reasonable, so I got killed by almost $300 in BS charges from UPS. My god... but the parts are here, look good. Will post pictures once things come together
