New to this site so I’m sorry if this has already been covered but I need help.

Have a 1986 se with a na 3.8 Buick series 2 in it the fuel gauge will not go above 1/4 tank. Unplugged the sending unit and the gauge go’s to full. Figured perfect ordered a sending unit from fiero store. Installed sending unit filled up the car and it’s doing the same thing? Any help would be appreciated

If you removed the wire from the fuel sending unit the gauge should go to zero. With some resistance (90 ohms) should go to full. I would remove the fuel/temp gauge and find a resistor 80-90 ohms and bench test it, but you may have a wiring problem in the car. If you need more information on bench testing let me know.

As mentioned above test the gauge. When I tested mine I did it from the connector near the tank using a variable resistor from Radio Shack at the time. I also used a 90 ohm fixed resistor. This way you're testing the gauge and the wire to the gauge as well. This type test will simulate what the float in the tank should be doing. Most electronic stores will have these parts for peanuts $.
