87 Iron Duke with in-pan filter (Page 1/1)

Does anyone have a part # for this? I can't find anything that says the 87 came with this engine, yet I know this is in fact the stock factory engine.

I dropped an 88 in my 87. Its a direct swap. Casting date should be on the block where the AC goes. Should just be 88 part numbers.

It isn't! It was the '88 that came with this particular duke.

Is it possible a late '87 might have this engine? The Dukes with the in-pan filters started trickling in elsewhere in GM's lineup in 1987.

I doubt they would have done that. The owners manual would be so wrong at that point.

True, but it wouldn't be the first time a manufacturer made a running change during the model year, with or without a change in the manual. Wrong part number in the manual would be a big oooops though.

More likely someone installed 88 or later motor w/ engine balancer and filter in the pan.

Why? who knows... maybe a warranty/recall job to had bad cam gear and no clue how to fix etc.
Warranty or Recall replace many 84 to 86 engines. Might had iffy/dead 87 and replace for same reason.

original Trans and Engine will have last few digits of VIN stamped into them. Same reason most of rest of big parts have VIN stickers for 87 and later.
Trans stamp is on top. AT trans may hind under mounting bracket. Not sure where Engine stamp is.

Do Not force the pan filter "cap" or will wreck the "nut."
If wreck already, need Lisle tool made to remove bypassing the OE "nut."

Don't make it now but many stores still have, Amzn Ebay etc might have them.

Use search for cap and gasket numbers to replace them. likely somewhere in archives.

⚠️ Warning: If you need to fix internal engine parts...
You will need to know exact engine used. 88 balancer isn't only thing change in later years. 90-92 had more changes and cam gear replace by cam w/ chain.
