removing a tripot from the CV axel (Page 1/1)
longjonsilver MAR 12, 09:28 AM
Doing my swap, i noticed a torn boot on the inner tripot. i am going to replace all four of them with parts from NAPA and i assume that by removing the inners i can slide off the outers and do both at once. i have read about a snap ring pliers that is needed to remove the tripot. Is it on the outer edge of the inner tripot? What sort of snap ring pliers is needed?
thanks

Astronomy says we will find a coded signal from outer space. Then we'll KNOW that life exists there, for coded signals aren't by chance.

Biology says there are coded genetic signals in every cell, but we KNOW that no intelligence created life.

I recall that the outer CV is taken apart by removing a snap ring around the axle.

Wipe everything clean/dry, then regrease. If the actual working parts aren't rusty, you should be fine.

When you regrease, don't use normal chassis grease; there exists grease intended for CV joints. It has that extreme pressure smell.

Thanks PMB.

The boots came with new grease and clamps. Then off to Princess Auto to get CV joint pliers. I didn't notice any bad smells, but the inners had different grease than the outers. The inners were purple the outers were black. i wanna get my motor started so a delay like repairing the drivers side axel can wait cuz its no harder to repair when the motor is in the car than out of the car. Perhaps it will work as is for a year or two. i want Freya running with her new motor by Paques, at least that is my goal. Been wanting more power ever since i bot Freya 38 years ago this December. Jelly 2M8 helped me with the wiring. No way cud i have figured it out by myself. He says it should start the first time, in fact he is worried that she will start tooooo fast so he says to disconnect the fuel pump so i have to crank it to raise the oil pressure. This in addition to the priming i did of the oil filter adapter. The NAPA boots were real high quality. The NAPA thermostat housing gasket fits just right unlike the ZZP one.
