DONT

Im suprised someone hasnt responded yet, but the idle screw is not meant to be tampered with. The ECU controls the idle.

If you adjust the idle screw, the car wont run right.

Also, please give us more info, for example car year, model, and transmission. Also, please give info with whats happening with your idle.

another fellow said if no leaks that some one turn the idle screw so to turn it back. 86 fiero v6 idles at 1500rpm when I put my finger in hole in throttle body it stalled and when I cover the intake it dies. so how do I get it to idle at 900rpms?

I found this:
"
1) With the IAC valve connected, ground the diagnostic (ALDL) terminal (same as you would do to flash trouble codes thru the check engine light).

2) Turn ON the ignition, but do NOT start the engine. Wait at least 30 seconds.

3) With the ignition still on, disconnect the IAC electrical connector.

4) Remove grounding of the diagnostic (ALDL) connector and start the engine. Allow the engine to fully warm up and go into closed loop.

5) Adjust the idle stop screw so the engine idle speed obtains 550rpm in drive (auto trans) or 650rpm in neutral (manual trans).

6) Turn the ignition off. Disconnect power from the ECM for at least 10 seconds to clear codes (in case any are present) and reconnect the IAC electrical connector.

Typically you don't mess with the idle screw. It came from the factory with a rubber plug covering the screw so that you can't turn it. But there are cases where it has been done, either with extensive engine modification which necessitates readjustment of the idle, or in the case of a previous owner fiddling with it.

The procedure listed above is the correct way to reset it if it has been tampered with.

The original WD-40 is not a penetrant. If your idle stop screw has definitely been messed with, and you need to re-adjust it, use a proper penetrant made for the job.

,what solvent would work to loosen the screw? the cover plug was gone when I got it.

Penetrating oil. Take your pick.

Resetting the Idle stop must follow directions for year and engine
