RD Fiero shifter rebuild w/ select cable questions (Page 1/1) Benn2002 APR 02, 03:18 PM Hey guys, I just bought a 1988 fiero formula. It has a 3.1that was boared out to a 3.4 w/ camaro pistons and a bunch of goodies on it. it is a manual with the Getrag tranny. I noticed that there was alot of "slop" in the shifter mechanism, so I bought Rodney's shifter rebuild kit, and the select arm rebuild kit. It was also a little hard (definitely doable) to push it 1&2 and 5&R. Just the left to right motion. So I also bought a new Gear select cable. I also went ahead and bought his ultimate Getrag shift kit and his Comp 1 short throw shifter. My problem is that I did only a little research before purchasing these and I can't seem to find 1) how hard these are to install? 2) will these parts fix the "issues" I am having? (Wouldn't consider them an issue but just wanted to upgrade) 3) and if anyone can lead me to some installation directions that would be greatly appreciated!! Thank you ! Very common issue with the Getrag tranny in a Fiero due to the end of the select cable pointing up in the engine bay... which allows rain/water to get into it and cause corrosion. zkhennings APR 06, 08:34 PM The RD kit is nice, and it can definitely help slop especially if the plastic factory bushings are worn, but the Fiero shifter is also not the greatest design. The bolt that it pivots left to right on can be loose and cause slop, I would start by checking that and make sure when you put it back together that it is not loose. I have the RD kit and recommend it, but I plan to make a custom shifter in the future due to the weaknesses in the Fiero design. It feels wrong that the forwards and backwards axis is in a different plane than the side to side axis.
