Any suggestions for aftermarket 17 or 18 (Page 1/2)
cam-a-lot APR 03, 08:21 AM
I just noticed that one of my wheels is badly damaged from running into a very deep pothole. There is no scraping that you would expect from hitting a curb, and nobody else drives my car.. (thank god, the wife and kids don't know how to drive standard

The current wheels are 18" Spyn (I don't know the model), and are quite old, so finding a matching wheel or set is likely not an option.

Any suggestions on something similar that is still available and will work on an 88 offset?

thanks

American Racing Estrella wheels are similar, with the split spokes. They have been around for a long time and probably won't be going away any time soon.

Larger tires and wheels really modernize the look of a Fiero but you must choose carefully. Due to the limited space in the Fiero wheel wells I don't believe that its a good idea going larger than 17" tires. If you go to 18" wheels then for clearance you will need to run tires with short sidewalls that will provide a very poor ride. I've run 7.5" W wheels 35mm offset and 45 profile tires and they clear but the ride over bumps is not as good as stock tires.

You are 100% correct Dennis. Duane (RULOOKIN) that built this car loved the bling and did a great job, but at the expense of ride quality. There was zero suspension travel in the front so I changed the springs to something with more travel. These wheels look awesome, but they are 18" , so the ultra low profile tires make for a super choppy ride. I am pretty sure that this contributed to the damage, as additional sidewalk height probably would have helped cushion the blow from the pot hole

I used to have ASA AR1 wheels on a former Fiero of mine that looked pretty good. I think it was 17". I will see if I can find some photos online

As you know the Fiero originally came with 60 profile tires that had a sidewall height of 5.1" . On my Fiero my 225 x17-45 tires (R) have a sidewall of 4" and in front 205 x45-17 only 3.8" . Low profile tires look great but ride hard. They also tend to require higher air pressures. My conclusion; the further that the sidewall size is reduced the harsher the ride becomes.

I run 17x7 38-48mm offset (depending upon which car), on the front. 215/45-17; and 17x8, 35mm offset, on the rear. 235/45-17.

For the correct offset for an 88...
If I'm searching on a page like Tire Rack, I search for the 1st gen New Beetle for the rears, and Older Subaru Impreza for the fronts. Both should be 5x100.
Make sure the centerbore is at least 57.1mm. Subaru-specific wheels are 56.1. (Most aftermarket are 72+mm centerbore.)

The trick will be finding the same wheels for both applications. But it can be done.

Edit - Your wheels appear to be the "Mod5". They show up on Maxim Wheels web site as discontinued.

If someone wanted a mix of comfort and modern looks on stock suspension (85) what wheel/tire size combo would you recommend?
Raydar APR 06, 12:45 PM
17x7 or 17x8. 35mm offset.
If you want to rotate tires, use 225/45-17s on all four. If you don't, go with 215/45-17 on the front (probably on a 7" rim), and 235/45-17 on the rear.

Will the 235/45-17 on 17x8 fit the rear of an 85 without any mods (coilovers) added?

Yes. That size on the rear of an 84.
