Car is hard to shift when Its running (Page 1/1)

Hey guys, need a little help here.
So I bought a 1988 fiero formula the other day and am new to the fiero world. It has a 3.1l roller cam block in it (can anyone tell me what this is too? Not very informed on these engines) and bigger camaro injectors and a bigger throttle body, egr delete etc etc. All of this and it seems to be running a bone stock ecu w/o a chip or anything. <-- yeah, I know, probably not great
It has the 5 speed Getrag tranny. First thing I did was a shifter rebuild and a new select cable since it was very hard to get into gear (WHILE THE CAR IS ON). I used rodney's cable. I know it shouldn't be that hard to get in into first, I have to use a significant amount of force to push it over and in 1st gear. Same when shifting into second.
It is easier to shift into 1st when the car is moving, I noticed that. It has a spec 3+ clutch in it with apparently a little less than 30k miles. The wierd thing is when the car is off, shifting feels amazing. Feels great, not hard to shift or anything. It's when I turn it on, it gets super hard and stiff.
I don't know what it could be, or if this is just how all fieros shift because I've never driven any other one.
Any ideas would be so helpful!!

It sounds like it could be a clutch problem. V8 Archie has some clutch info on his Archisms page.

I had similar problems with my Spec Stage III+ clutch in a 3800 swap. I ended up with one of Rodney Dickmans master cylinders and Isuzu slave cylinders.
It shifts great now.

Here's the Isuzu slave thread https://www.fiero.nl/forum/...070315-2-077966.html

Thanks for the feedback, I ordered rodney's slave cylinder and a new master last night, hopefully that'll fix it but I don't think it will, I know they could be replaced so I went bought them but I just don't know what else it could be. Can I ask why u went with the isuzu slave? Is it better? I ordered rodney's Getrag slave.

You were correct in ordering the Getrag slave. The Isuzu was only used in the 4 cylinder cars. Of course, it's possible that your Formula Getrag could have been replaced, but obviously not if you have replaced the cables. You would have known when trying to install them.

The suspect would be the slave cylinder. I would change that first. Then do a gravity bleed on the system. If that doesn't fix the problem, then replace the slave. Pretty sure Rodney would allow returns if you don't need the slave.

The Isuzu slave has a smaller diameter so you get more slave extension for the same amount of pedal travel. Mine was a bit hard shifting due to some clutch drag, if I made sure I pushed the pedal all the way to the floor shifting was better. With the Isuzu slave the clutch pedal does not have to be pushed as far and it shifts great, I didn't notice much difference in pedal effort. My DD is a manual also and the Fiero pedal travel is about the same with the Isuzu slave so it just works better for me. Here's another thread that explains it pretty good.
