Decklid Torsion Rod Replacement Observations (Page 1/1)

I had a torsion rod give out last week. It was my first ever, having owned 5 Fieros. The engine was running and all of a sudden...snap. Thought the engine had done something catastrophic.

Anyway. it was one of the most stressful jobs I've done on a Fiero. Kept worrying about breaking the rear window or a finger.

Having researched by reading every thread I could find, it seems like no one could definitively say whether it is possible to change out the torque rods without removing the decklid. I can confirm a broken one can be removed with the hinges on (My broken one snapped right at the bottom of the hook). However, I doubt the new one could be placed on without removing the decklid but it *might* be possible.

Thankfully I had a complete set of NOS white rods with GM tags which I had bought 20 years ago for another Fiero that had had the spoiler added and had the wrong rods. I never had the courage to swap them out but glad I had picked up a set as I'm sure they're long discontinued. I still have the other NOS one for the other side and somehow at some point I acquired one used white rod for the side that snapped last week so I still have a full L-R set but hopefully will never have to do this job again.

Also I removed the decklid with spoiler solo. What I did was put blankets on the roof of the car. Removed all the hinge bolts but one which was loosened. Stood one foot in the trunk and one on the top of the engine and lifted it straight up and set the decklid on the roof. Installation was reverse. I don't know how one could put the decklid back on from outside the car without help but it's probably possible to remove it alone from standing at the side of the car if one is super strong.

Congratulations on replacing the rod without breaking the window or yourself . And I am also glad to learn that when hearing a large 'bang' from the back of the car that all is not lost ... there is a chance that it might just be one of those rods.
