Stumbling Question (Page 1/1)

Good afternoon. We finally had some nice weather here in CO so I had cause to turn my AC on for the first time. When running the AC and I come to a stop, when accelerating from that stop the car stumbles badly. In one case the car completely died.

The idle is perfect, and the problem does not present when the AC is off. It does seem to be worse when the AC is on max. If I accelerate very slowly from a stop when the AC is on it seems to be okay. But I mean very slowly.

I'm thinking maybe just the belt, but am open to ideas?

86 GT automatic. The AC has been converted previously to R134.

Thank you!

Was the AC system flushed when it was converted to R134a? The compressor oils used in a R12 system and a R134a system are incompatible and could possibly be causing black death in the AC system. Maybe this is putting additional load on the compressor when it's turned on? Search the archive for black death for more information.

BTW, I don't think understand why the problem would be worse when the AC is on high unless the problem is inherently electrical. The high setting controls the fan speed and shouldn't affect the compressor which uses an on-off electrical clutch.

The conversion looks to be very professional, it was done at some point before I got the car. The AC works perfectly and I don't note any issues at idle which seems strange to me. It could just be inconsistent which is why I think max is worse. But for certain it's only happening when the AC is on. If I put the gas to the floor the car dies dead as a door nail.

The car doesn't even Rev, it just dies, it's really weird.
