I'm asking for help identifying this canister thingy. It is in one of the AC lines right at the compressor. This is not the accumulator in the frunk. It is smaller than a beer can. Whatever it is, what does it do within the AC system? This is on an '88 V6.

Helps to even out the pressure pulses from the compressor which in turn reduces noise, so yeah, a muffler!

If it's leaking (and you can't find a replacement) or interfering with a swap, a hose without it can be used. Just need to check around for a commercial shot that does custom hoses (usually they advertise that they do custom hydraulics), go in there with the hose you have, ask them for what you want. It's usually inexpensive.
I've had a shop local to me make a variety of custom hoses for me, price usually runs 60 to 120 bucks, depending on length and purpose. They've made AC hoses and power steering hoses for me.

It's preventing slugging of AC oil and refrigerant which can cause damage. ------------------ DR MILLER

Nice! Good looking car. Is it a MERA, or an earlier kit?

I had to have my 4.9 hoses reconfigured due to a motor mount being in the way. The shop suggested it would be a lot easier (and "space effective") if they could remove the muffler. So now I'm running without one. My A/C is a bit noisier, at the compressor, but everything still works fine.
