Installation of Deck Lid Gasket (Page 1/1)

This seems like a simple job to replace the 88GT deck seal gasket. I have a new one from the Fiero Store and couldn't find much on the Forum about helpful hints to install it. I also bought the 3M sealant from Fiero Store.

Is it better to apply the sealant inside the groove of the gasket or to put it on the metal lip around the trunk or both?

Are any clamps used to keep it from creeping while the sealant cures?

I just want to do it right the first time!

You don't need any sealant. Just pull the old one off and push the new one on. The grooved piece under the gasket should grip the edge of the trunk opening firmly enough to stay on. If it feels loose to you, squeeze the groove together with your fingers and reinstall. Start on the short sides and seat both sides and corners. Then, work along the long sides to seat them. Make sure the groove is seated firmly on the edge of the trunk opening as far as it will go. If you've had no collision or other incident that tweaked the frame, you should have a watertight seal.

Thanks!

Does the long side at the rear go over the plastic or is it tucked under it? It seems like it wants to be tucked under it.

I can't recall. I'll take a photo in the morning and try to post it.

I purchased a NOS gasket and when I removed my old original, it had adhesive at the back corners of the gasket. I didn't use any adhesive or sealant and it leaked. I later applied some Ultra Black RTV for a distance of about 6 inches up the side and across the rear from each rear corner and the leak stopped. I applied it into the groove of the gasket then pressed the gasket onto the body flange. Ultra Black RTV begins to set up quickly, so no clamping is needed.

Over the plastic...

BTW, I have a TFS trunk gasket on each of my GT's. Neither have mastic or sealant installed and both are leak free.

Funny, I was thinking about removing mine!

I only use my car on nice weather weekends, and I use spray detailer to clean it, so it rarely sees water, and it would allow more heat to escape between the deck lid and rear glass. The only downside to that is, if I'm out on a nice weekend and that freak heavy rain storm moves through, all that water is going on my hot manifold, yikes!

Ummm... you're talking about what is usually referred to here as the recall strip (because this weatherstrip was removed during one of the recalls). Everybody else in this thread is talking about the trunk seal.

Yep, I was mistaken, I was talking about the recall seal (pros & cons of removing or keeping is highly debated for decades).
