Vent Tube Mod for Recall 88-C-24A (and deck lid seal) (Page 1/1)
Skybax MAY 09, 11:59 AM
In reference to recall 88-C-24A where the crankcase vent tube is modified/removed and capped at air cleaner on V6...

I read the archives and I'm still not 100% clear on why this was done. (specifically)

Adding to confusion, the connections on earlier years were different than later years.

Reason for asking, my 86 is still original/untouched and I'd like to understand better before making decision to modify.

---------

EDIT: I just found it... "the hose was moved to air intake just before TB prevent the air filter from being soaked in oil"

Having a well maintained car with no blow-by and a clean air cleaner canister, I might leave the original setup alone.

But it also means the other recalls weren't done, most importantly the heat shield around the forward exhaust manifold.

I guess it could also be a blessing in disguise, because I read many cases were GM Hacks did butcher work to manifold area.

---------

PS: While on this recall subject, question about the deck lid seal where it meets the rear window... I know 20 years ago many Fiero owners reinstalled them because they didn't want water getting on hot exhaust manifold contributing to cracking. Since I only use my car on nice weather weekends and it never sees water, the logic is without seal it would allow more heat to escape between the deck lid and rear glass. The only downsides to that is, the rear glass will be hotter and if I'm out on a nice weekend and that freak heavy rain storm moves through, all that water is going on the hot manifold.

I was wondering what the consensus is on the deck lid seal these days?

IMO, the recall was just a bunch of hot air to satisfy the government bureaucrats. It did nothing to reduce the fire risk and it just increased the chances of a cracked manifold. I found an OEM deck edge strip at the junkyard about 10 years ago, installed it and have had zero problems. I wish that someone would reproduce this part so that I could try to match it up with a generic strip, so I can use it in my other Fieros. If any member has a cross section of this strip we may be able to find an alternative.

The absolute best replacement... actually an improvement on the recall weatherstrip, was discussed Here.

I agree 99%... a reactive and proactive precaution after the 4 cyl fire media frenzy. But the biggest problem IMO was the masses having a mid-engine sports car. Think about it, all the other mid-engine sports cars from the 80's like Lotus, Delorean, Lambo, Ferrari... were mostly owned by enthusiasts who are somewhat aware of their vehicle. Basic awareness of leaves, smells, seals falling down, oil accumulating in areas, don't park on dry grass, and the list goes on. The masses are not even aware of their own tire pressure, so you can't expect them to have enthusiast awareness. Nowadays, the majority of Fiero's are owned by enthusiasts as extracurricular vehicles just like the other 80's mid-engine sports cars listed above.

So from the few replies and that custom rain gutter thread, I take it many are still in favor of the deck lid seal (pros outweigh the cons) and I'll leave mine on for now.

I did check the splash guards in front of the rear tires where the coolant tubes/hoses pass through, and somebody did trim them many years ago when it was under original ownership, so that tells me somebody made a conscious decision to do that one but not the others, interesting.
