I am replacing the outer boot and need to take the cv joint off the outer end of the axle, How do you take it off?

If you tilt the joint and clean off some grease, you'll see there is a C clip you can remove. Will come apart easy after you get it.

Hope this helps:

It helps a bit, but I cannot find the race retaining clip, is a 88 axle different ?

All Fiero axles are the same except for the length of the left side to the right side and right side manual and automatic. So, there are 3 different lengths, overall. Nothing different by year, just side to side and by transmission.

So there is a race retaining ring that I cannot see that needs to come off to slide the cv joint off the end of the shaft?

The picture came from the '88 Service Manual. The snap ring is in there very close to the inner race. As the picture below shows, the snap ring may be recessed. With all the grease in there it may be very hard to see, but it's in there.

Thanks, I took a really close look through all the grease this morning and I believe I found it. When I get home later I will try and remove it.

The ring won't come out.

Expand the ring to "unlock" the axle to remove that from the ball race.
Even then often still hard to pull the axle.
