88 gt 2.8 won’t start (Page 1/1)

So my 2.8 GT won’t start and I’m very confused on why.. I will try to turn it and everything turns on (lights, fuel pump, etc) but doesn’t crank, not even clicking. I replaced the battery, and the starter, checked some fuses and replaced 1 fusable link (I don’t know if it was the right one.. I’m not very confident when it comes to the electrically of the car). Any suggestions on what it would be?

If the engine doesn't turn over, the current may not be reaching the starter. Could be a bad cable, discharged battery , bad starter or poor connections.
Measure the voltage at the battery terminals. It should read 12.4 volts .If not its likely the alternator is not charging it. If it measures up, then measure the voltage on starter between large terminal and ground. It should read battery voltage. If not its the cable. If you have 12V there then make a connection between the two starter terminals. (starter and solenoid) I use a screwdriver or you can use a remote start switch. This should energize the starter. If it doesn't the starter is probably bad.

I see where you're going there. Yes, it certainly sounds like the problem could be a bad or misadjusted clutch/neutral safety switch.

88GTGuy, did the car used to start ok and suddenly it stopped working? Had you been working on it? Or had it been a long time since you last ran it? The more detail you share the more we can help diagnose the problem.

The privious owner had it sitting for quite some time and rarely drove it. When I bought it it ran great but the battery was slowing going bad. ( it was charging but not putting out enough power) so I replaced the battery and after that the alarm ( that the previous owner added) kept going off randomly and it start after like 2 tries. Then a couple days later it won’t start at all

Most alarms cut the starter cable. sounds to me gutting that system messed that up.
