Adjusting the Washer Nozzles on a 1988 2.5L (probably the same for all years) (Page 1/1)

Hi All,
When I originally bought the car a year ago, it had had tube from the washer pump to the T junction cut and plugged, which seems kind of weird. Anyway, I did some checking with a volt-meter and discovered that the issue was just the washer pump had gone out. I replaced it with an ANCO part that was on clearance at Rockauto as well as the tube and I now everything works!

Well, kinda works. The nozzles are angled such that about half the washer fluid is thrown onto the roof. I think I need to angle them downward just a touch, but I'm afraid of breaking the nozzles, which don't look like a very common part.

Does anyone have experience adjusting the angle of the nozzles? I can see that bolt that attaches them and I might try to shim something on one side, but maybe somebody has a tip or experience with this problem. First I thought that the problem was more one of being stationary when using the washer, but even when driving quite fast I'm putting a lot of fluid on my roof.

Thanks!

DON'T ADJUST BY BENDING. They will break. (Ask me how I know.)

To adjust mine after I replaced it, I loosened the bolt holding it down shimmed the nozzle to adjust the aim. It's a trial and error process 'til you get what you're happy with. Shim the front to make the spry hit the windshield higher. Shim the back to make it hit lower. When you've hitting where you want, trim the plastic to the contour of the washer nozzle.

BTW, I used thin plastic sheet but you could use aluminum foil or thin, sheet lead flashing material. You can cut both with a sharp utility knife and they won't rust or compress when you tighten the bolt.

Thanks for the hard won advice. Everything gets easier when you know someone else has done it. That's one of the great benefits of this forum. Someone reaches out, in this case from the other side of the planet, and explains how he dealt with the same problem and what to look out for!

I'll report on my results.
