Never idles (Page 1/2)

no vacuum leaks, new tcc solenoid, new IAC valve yet it dies in idle and reverse. I have to be in neutral at stops with my feet on the brake and gas revving a little bit. What is my problem here?

There are so many unknown variables, any of which could be contributing to a less than healthy engine. Ignition (plugs, wires, coil, timing etc), fueling (fuel pressure, injectors etc), compression (valves, head gasket)... and of course sensors, any one (or more) of which hasn't quite triggered a CEL yet.

so should I just replace all of those things to see if it makes a difference? They need replaced eventually but maybe now is the time to get new coils, spark plugs, injectors, and much more

this car hasn’t been driven in over a decade. It’s now that I realize I may need to just replace a lot of things in the fiero before expecting it to drive completely fine

all those things will probably need replacement but it doesn't mean everything needs to be done. Everything has a troubleshooting process. Though I've never had a fuel pump work after that long correctly and the distributor is probably rusted on the inside with the pickup/ cap and rotor.

should I get the parts through rock auto?

Exactly. There's no point indiscriminately throwing money/parts at the problem without proper diagnosing.

Kaiden, have all the spark plugs at least been removed and inspected?

I plan on getting new spark plugs this week.... could it be the throttle body?

Start with new plugs, new fuel filter and I would put on a new throttle position sensor. If the car runs fairly normal on the highway it is probably not a spark problem or a fuel pump issue. Clean up the dizzy for sure but I would be checking for airflow blockages. Mice will build nests inside air cleaners and tubing.
