Resistance on Gas Pedal- Undriveable (Page 1/1)

Recently I have finally got my '84 Fiero back on the road, which has been great. I put about 50 miles on it last week and 50 miles yesterday for 100 total. One issue that popped up yesterday though was that the gas pedal had a lot of resistance, not smooth but choppy, and was hard to push in, and when you did push it in it would rev up a bunch because it took that much more pressure to move the pedal in the first place, which makes it barely driveable in my urban area as it can go almost to redline just setting off. With the engine off, moving the gas pedal also makes what I can best describe as a "crunchy" sound when pushed in, and has that resistance. The heat shield around the throttle cable melted a bit before I noticed and separated, but doesnt seem to be causing problems.
Any ideas or fixes would be greatly appreciated.

Here is what the frayed cable looks like. The pink part is all intact, just the bottom where it first comes out of the shroud got a bit melted.

Basically, if you can manually operate the throttle body by hand and it moves smoothly, you'll need a new cable. They're about $50 from the Fiero Store.

Can't really make out your photo. But I would agree its time for a new cable.

Its a bit of a pain to fish the cable through the passenger compartment.

It is very common for the throttle plate on a old throttle body to freeze up. Get some light lubricating oil on the plate shaft (inside and out) and work it by hand. Once the throttle arm turns freely then replace the cable. Good idea to oil the cable as well. Replacing the cable is not hard but its an involved process as the center console, shift console and the radio console must be removed to access the cable.
