4.9 ease of access (Page 1/1)

How hard is it to do basic maintenance work on the 4.9 while in the car, without dropping the cradle?

As in, can I change the spark plugs, can valve covers come off? Belt changes? I'm pretty settled on a 4.9 swap but if I have to drop the engine to change spark plugs I may change my mind. I used to own one and loved the torque curve and the way it drove. It was a long time ago and I didn't have to do any maintenance while I owned it.

Thank you!

The front bank plugs can be accessed easily, except #1 and #3, I geo after them from under the car.
Plugs only need changed every 70k or so - it's not a big deal.

The 4.9 needs very little in the way of periodic maintenance, change the oil, put gas in it and drive it.

I have over 130k on my 4.9 swapped Formula - after the swap......

Oil change is the same as on most cars.. You go underneath , open the drain plug drain the oil, put the plug back and fill it up with 10W30 . I prefer synthetic for its better lubricity and longer life. The oil filter is changed from the top which makes it easy. Joe shared a trick for a clean filter change by using a plastic bag over it while removing it. This saves a potential mess by keeping used dirty oil from getting all over the transmission. Distributor cap and rotor are changed the same as any GM car with coil in cap ignition. All that's needed is a screwdriver.
