Possible Source For Improved Shifters (Page 1/1)

Hi, Guys and Gals,

The 5-speed shifters, even when working at their best are pretty darned vague. Another forum I am on (DF Kitcars) produces a midengined kit called the Goblin which uses the Ecotech and parts from a Cobalt doner. That means they need a shifter which works sorta kinda like our Fieros. The have found some after market shifters which look to me to possibly be adapted to us in the Fiero! It might be worth a look through this thread: https://dfkitcar.com/forum/...cial-group-buy.2356/ if for no reason other than to see some beautiful machining and parts.

Mebbe a look by FieroGuru might lead to a replacement for us!

Regards,

Larry

Thank you, Skybax,

I know all about Rodney and have ALL of his short and sport shifter stuff.....my vagueness comment still applies. Did you actually look at those aftermarket shifters? The replace the stock shifter not just try and optimize it.

Just going by the photos on their site, I would wonder how tall the entire apparatus is. If it sticks up higher than the stock shifter, that is a no-go for me.

I have zero interest in developing a new custom shifter...

Do you have a link to a page with photos?

There's nothing wrong with the design of the Fiero shifter. If the shifter is causing "vagueness" then bushings are worn out or cables are worn out or your transmission is worn out.

I'm not sure what your standards are, but the Fiero feel is quite good. I constantly upshift and downshift without the clutch and don't have problems. If you're missing shifts maybe you need to tighten up the loose nut behind the wheel.
That being said, it'll never be a Mjata or S2000, but it's hardly "vague".

Unless the application is for racing, the Fiero shifter should work sufficiently for street and occasional strip use. I don't believe that its much worse than any other cable operated shifter. The issue with these shifters is that over time the shift cables stretch and create too much play in the mechanism.

I've always been intrigued on swapping a different style shift mechanism within our cars just to test the limits of a better setup. The above video shows of a full swap of the engine, trans and shifter assembly. While not working with the standard Fiero transmission, it still interesting to see the idea implemented
