Head Gasket time? (Page 1/1)
Firezappy JUN 29, 09:19 AM
I have posted several times about overheating problems over the time I have had my Fiero. I have done many things that should help remedy the situation, but none have worked. It seems as though I always use a very small amount of water, but I cannot find any leaks anywhere. It always happens suddenly, some sort of gas gets trapped on the engine side, making the temperature peg. No matter how carefully I burp it, I will be pulled over at some point. Yesterday was the last straw, I floored it once, then immediately within the next minute my temp gauge goes from low to full. I have even done the little drill a hole in the thermostat to let air pass over fix. I got the old 2.5 iron duke, before I tear it open anything else I should be trying, or anything I should be replacing if I am taking it apart anyway? I am going to put a new timing gear in it of course as well, anything else?

Pull the spark plugs and keep them in order.
Is #4 cleaner then others?
If true, Has bad intake gasket and #4 is sucking coolant.

Need to replace w/ FELPRO not others. FELPRO is make to prevent this failure mode.

T-stat tube and more can leak a little when hot w/o being obvious.
Look at every joint when engine hot for a while.

All I can say is my hero. For as long as I have owned the car I have always had to replace the 4th spark plug early because of corrosion. It is most defiantly getting wet constantly. You have saved me so much time. Thank you so much.

The Outside of a plug isn't what matters.
Inside tip of plug is where cleaner etc for #4 sucking coolant.

Worse, if this problem has been going on for years likely #4 at minimum has problems and may need major work.
Coolant gets in there then down to oil or "burns" poison the cat & O2 sensor.

The car seems to run okay otherwise. When I get down there I will look at it, but unless it is really bad I will stop the leak and maybe change the 02 sensor and truck on. Although I may look at it and find a nightmare who knows. But I have a good place to start looking at first, thanks again.
