Jerking acceleration in high gears (Page 1/1)
842m4SE JUL 15, 10:26 PM
Having an issue with my '84. When I get into the higher gears - 3rd/4th under gentle acceleration the throttle seems to cut in and out rapidly, making a rough drive. This applies under more throttle as well but it doesn't seem to change much, and is usually most pronounced around 2-3k rpm but also out of that range. Idle is fine and the issue just started pretty recently.
Any ideas?

Sounds like intermittent ignition misfire, possible bad spark plug wire arching. (one of 20 possibilities)

What would the solution to that be? I've replaced the spark plugs but other than that haven't serviced the ignition system. It sat for 23 years if that makes a difference.

Replace park plug wires.

Ignition coil going bad would also behave like that.

Do wires first then test drive, so you can see if it resolved it, before you replace the coil.

Because they are not expensive items, it wouldn't hurt to replace them anyways due to the age of the parts and the car sitting.

Many coils being sold today are junk (even AC Delco), so I recommend buying a Standard Blue Streak Coil through O'Rileys or online, at least that is still Made in Poland at Standard factories.

PS: You also definitely want to replace the fuel filter regardless.
