Wont go into 5th or reverse (Page 1/1)

I have a 88 5speed getrag transmission, I replaced those two plastic bushings on that piece that pivots up and down but still won't shift into 5 or reverse, but all the rest of the gears work fine, I'm really hoping is just a cable adjustment and if so how do you adjust it? And if it's not a cable adjustment what worse problem could I be facing? Thanks

First, remove the shift surround. Place the shifter into the 1st gear position and look for a hole in the side of the shift mechanism. It's just below the lever pivot point. Using the appropriate size drill bit, insert it into the hole so that it locks the shifter into place.

Next, go to the rear and loosen the nut on the large cable. Push the lever to the rear, then lightly wiggle it front to rear to be sure it's settled in it's detent position. Lock it down. This should align all your gates.

Thanks, I tried it and it's possible to get into reverse but it's still a little hard, I'm thinking that my shift cables might need replacing soon

The select (side to side) cable for the Getrag tranny is notorious for becoming difficult to move (due to corrosion from water entry into the tranny end of the cable). With my Formula, I need to use much more than usual force to push the gearshift lever to the right (for 5th and R). With your select cable disconnected at the tranny end, see how easy (or not) the shifter is to move from side to side. If it's binding, Rodney Dickman sells quality shift/select cables.

[Edit to add] Make sure your shift/select cables are routed correctly in the engine bay. The diagram has been posted here many times. Using the search function should call it up. Incorrect cable routing could possibly also be contributing to shifter resistance.

Also make sure the master cylinder is full and not leaking, by looking underneath it and inside cabin where the rod attaches to the pedal, make sure its not wet around/under rubber grommet.
