Replacement Hood Release Cable (Page 1/1)

Hi, All,

Well, I busted my hood release cable today (YES, I KNOW there is an extra emergency cable present, thank heavens). Dorman sells a replacement cable that will work, but it is $21! Had a sudden thought (yeah, it rattles around in there and may expire from

loneliness): A bicycle cable is five feet long, has multiple ends and crimps and slides inside a sheath....so if the sheath can be run (it is 1/8" O.D.) the sheath would be permanent and make any future cable replacement a piece of cake! Oh! and they are only about $10!

So my real question is does anyone know if there is clearance in there to pull a 3mm sheath to replace the existing cable? (The old cable will work to fish the new one if it will fit.

TIA,

and stay safe and well,

Larry

I replaced my inner gas cable went a thicker guage as kept snapping it more than once. I would try the bike line for opening trunk.

The existing cable is pretty close to 3mm as well... but oval shaped. There are 2 grommet holes for the cable run. The holes are large to accommodate the larger cable ends. Of course, the grommets themselves are tight on the cable and will likely come out with the existing cable. Once out, you might be able to swap them to the new cable and then feed it through. It's unlikely that you'll be able to attach the new cable to the old one and simply pull it through. I happened to have my dash out when I replaced mine so I can't comment on how easy the access is.

Neils88,

Thanks for the info. I think I will give it a try. It really would be nice to have a cable sheath that remains installed even when replacing the cable itself.

I am better off doing more work at my leisure (if it IS more work) than having to do an emergency replacement in much less than optimum conditions!

Thanks again,

You can buy cable at Tractor Supply, Lowes or Home Depot to match the size of the original cable. Then just pull the broken cable out of the housing and crimp the proper ends on.
