CEL always on, doesnt blink when grounded (Page 1/2)
Xenoblast AUG 09, 07:28 PM
After installing an EGR delete chip a fellow member sent me, the engine runs weird (probably just needs to be driven a little for that) and the part that worries me more is that the check engine light is always on. If i ground the connectors to check the codes, the check engine light stays on and doesnt blink.

Who made your EGR delete chip? Put the stock chip back in and see if the issue goes away. I bet it will.

Also look for bent pins, from when you installed the chip. It happens easily.

I pulled it out and no pins are bent. I also noticed that the chips are slightly different, the one that this ECM came with has a little block glued onto it, dont know if that is important or not.

left is EGR delete chip

I noticed there is a notch in the chip, and so i lined that up with the - on the bracket. When I started my car, the CEL light was flickering. When i read the codes, I actually got something; code 51. Did i get a dud chip or is there something i need to do with the chip or the car?

It's been a long time since I've messed around with PROMs, but I happen to have one here in my desk. I notice the center notch in the chip lines up with the center notch in the carrier when it's mounted correctly. Did you have it reversed the first time?

Yes I did, I thought that it could only go in one way because one side has pairs of 2 and the other pairs of 3 on the female side. This is my first time even looking at eproms. Did i brick the chip by doing this?

You're correct about the pin configuration... but with them lined up correctly in the carrier, the center notches are also lined up.

Did you have the PROM inserted into the carrier incorrectly, or did you plug the carrier (containing the PROM) into the ECM incorrectly?

I had the PROM inserted into the carrier incorrectly, the carrier can only go into the slot one way bc of how its designed. In effect, the PROM was inserted backwards.

Okay... I didn't think the carrier could be plugged into the ECM the wrong way around, but it's been a long time since I've tried.

I don't know enough about PROMs and/or ECMs to know if you've fried something... but unfortunately it doesn't look too good at the moment.
