Rust issue (Page 1/1)

Ok so I have shanked over 5000+ into this 86 gt 3800sc fiero i found 1 spot that is a bad issue to me the trunk has a rot spot pretty bad. The upper frame rails are mint though strut towers are great also no rot along the body from the front frame rails to the floor pans or the drain holes all perfect. How bad is this I was thinking of getting a clean section cut out and then welding it into the car. The battery tray is gone rotted to the wheel well is perfectly fine here is a pic of it

Looks like you caught it early should be simple to fix.

Wire wheel the rust away to solid sheet metal cut out the rust. If you want it to look factory you could grind the welds down and apply seam sealer then paint everything to match. There's some nice undercoat you can apply from the underside that helps a lot, but if your decklid is leaking it may be rusting from inside the trunk.. something to check for.

If you didn't know the FieroStore carries brand new battery tray package if you need to replace that: https://www.fierostore.com/.../Detail.aspx?s=50254

I've restored a few rusted out Fiero's over the years and it can become a real weekend project to replace the rails, trunk, floor pans and welding patches in. Most folks don't even bother but I enjoy it.

Agree you are lucky that is fine just need to sort it out right away. Wire brush on a drill rust converter to start.

Need to see the bottom too. Bottom likely has more rust you must clean/fix that too or fix the top won't last long.
