3800SC swap - Servicing after install (Page 1/1)

Hello all.

On an '86 Fiero w/a 3800SC installed, how hard is it to replace the following items?;

Alternator
Starter
Knock Sensors
Water Pump
Oil Pan Gasket

Actually, the 3800SC is not installed yet. I am about to install it and am wondering if I should replace some or all of the above items first. Thoughts? Any other parts/sensors/etc I should consider replacing before installing the motor? I am just worried about serviceability once the motor is in.

The donor car ran fine prior to removing the motor.

Grateful for suggestions or advice.

Thank you!

I dont know about 3800 engines much, but id say to replace as much as you can, like cheap sensors, water pump, oil pan gasket with the engine out of the car. I dont see starters or alternators failing anytime soon so I wouldnt replace those if you want to save money.

You should also try and replace high labor low cost items like the timing chain, etc while it is out depending on the mileage

Thank you. Is the alternator and starter easily accessible after installation? If so I will just use what I have now and replace them if/when they fail. I am just worried about the parts being difficult to swap after the installation.

The motor has 125k miles. Think I should change the timing chain?

Thank you again.

out of those things listed, the oil pain gasket is the hardest. Depending on your motor mount, it'll be in the way. Which means you'd need to support the engine and remove the mount to get the oil pan off.
The water pump is probably the next hardest.. not impossible to do but 100 times easier with the engine on a stand.

The rest of that stuff is pretty easy to change with the motor in the car.

Thank you. The knock sensors are also accessible once the motor is installed?
