4.9 + F40? (Page 1/1)

Hi, Folks,

This should be an easy one: Does the F-40 Six Speed bolt up to the Caddy 4.9?

TIA

The bolt pattern should be std FWD V6 GM. Its not a direct bolt in but, with a proper flywheel, HD clutch and shift mechanism it can work. . That box will take the power of the 4.9L engine and six speeds will enhance the driving experience and provide great gasoline mileage. It's a strong transmission but not an easy install. just ask the person who has done one.

Yes it will, this swap was done in Archie's shop, check this page -- http://www.frontiernet.net/~jgunsett/6speed.html

For starter mounting check with Archie. he has a mounting bracket for a Power Master starter. Or this may help -- http://www.frontiernet.net/~jgunsett/Starter.html

Any questions I will try to answer.

You'll need the F40 from the Pontiac G6 with the 3900 engine.
I would use the Allante starter. (It's what I used with my 4.9 Getrag.) It's a gear reduction starter, and bolts right on.

Thank you all so much for your answers.

I suspect it would be a nice combinaltion setting up for a 5-speed shifter and basically locking out first gear.

Much to my surprise there is a thread on such an install in the archives (yeah, I know, search FIRST!)

Be well and stay dry!

2nd gear would end up too tall for everyday launching... probably you would want a "1.5 gear" instead.

Fieroguru explained how to change the final drive somewhere.

Low would still be nice for creeping along in traffic jams (without undue clutch slip), and for starting on steep hills.

You could simply rename 1st to Low (as in, not for everyday use), and renumber the higher gears.

Without getting into the details, yes the F40 will bolt up to a 4.9 motor. It does take a good amount of research to make it work though. I have a 4.9/F40 combo sitting on an 88 cradle right now waiting to go into my car.

I convinced Ed to use the smaller Allante starter on my getrag install.
Worked without having to notch the getrag. But now I have an Archie 6-speed kit. My mechanic hasn't started the swap yet but should soon. Hopefully the starter continues to be a non-issue.

I mounted my Allante starter with my F40 and it clears.
