Straight cut cam and crank gears (Page 1/1) |

I have seen pictures of straight cut gears, looks as if these were used on some Iron Duke and Fiero engines. I am in desperate need for information or part numbers what cars they were used on etc. Are these still available or can you find used items ?
If you want to know why I need them I can post that Info, just ask.

Thanks for the info. does anyone know of a steel helical cut cam gear. I have one from Argentina but they don't seem available anymore. My inline makes a little over 1000 HP and I was having trouble with the thrust bearing. Long story on the fix.

HP does matter here but High RPM likely have problems....
Angle cut gear set is "quieter" but also stops cam run out. At high RPM that likely loads up the gear and thrust bearing way beyond spec. Strait cut gear set may help but may need to add parts to the cover to limit cam run out because OE "thrust bearing" can break if loaded from the back. The Bolts to mount the bearing mostly just holds it in place when used w/ angle cut gear.
Angle cut sets are/where most only available as OE phenolic or aluminum cam gear. Both uses Steel gear for crank.
Note: GM has a TSB to replace them "easier" but also update to oil the gear more. 1mm (.040 inch) drill bit thru a small plug behind the cam gear allow more oil spraying it w/o dropping oil pressure.
Plus "new" cam thrust/retaining part have holes to let more oil but that also no longer made.

Caution: High pressure/flow oil pump or problems w/ pump, distributor or both will also put larger loads on the cam and timing set. While the Aluminum gear set is "stronger" the OE, often only hinds those problems w/ stock and mod'ed Dukes w/ HEI. High RPM also cause more load from the pump and dist and thus more load for the cam and gears to "eat."
