EVAPORATIVE SYSTEM Filter 2.8 (Page 1/1)

Just going through the many things that need to be done to my new to me '88 GT. EVAP filter was an absolute muddy, dirty, thick mess of grime. $1.59 well spent!

It came oversized so I just traced the original to it and cut to fit. Got the replacement at O'reilly.

Im curious, Would a dirty filter affect anything other then possibly environmental damage? I have yet to even check the one on mine.

Ill probably change mine soon regardless bc of this post just to have something to do lol

Note: All Fiero uses Same EVAP system and "can."

Floss/Foam Filter only blocks big crap getting into the carbon inside.
Filters look like above likely has carbon problems and the "can" doesn't do much or is "dead."

Fram and some others make/made a filter that fits exactly but need to be bit careful installing w/o punching a hole in "screen" keeping carbon in.
Filter after stuffing edges under the "rim" should fill every space.

Don't cut them down until you try to install first and way too big.
Many old filters here have wear or shrink or was replace before wrong and may not fit right so don't trust them.

Carbon Dies? Why?
Some reason why but big one is If EVAP "Can" gets wet inside w/ fuel or polluted water, Carbon is "dead" and won't work even if "dries out" after.
You can't buy new "Cans" for Fiero and many other old cars.
Might replace the Carbon but many "Cans" are Sealed by Sonic Welding etc so can't replace the carbon easy.
Active Carbon isn't like other types and must be close to same size as OE.
Replace options assumes if valve etc at top of Fiero "cans" are good.

Note that Fiero and some others Bracket to hold the "can" has a metal Shield to protect the bottom.
Problem w/ that...
Crap builds up there often holding wet crap against the bottom.
Metal rusted and shield is gone.

The shield has openings to drain water but the big open side faces the fender and noise insulation and often that area holds a lot of crap.
Has a "notch" too but easy to block it w/ crap from falling down/in fender opening.

To remove the "Can" first seperate the soft lines On the Metal Tube side. That side is often safer and easier plus is easier to test too.
Then take out the clamp bolt.

To test the "Can:"
1. Blow thru Fuel Vent. Should flow with minor restriction.
2. Blow air thru larger vac line. Should Not allow air flow.
3. Suck on small vac line and block with a finger. (Yes a Bit award.) This should Not allow air flow but allow the valve to open.
4. Blow air thru larger vac line. Should flow with minor restriction.
⚠️ Warnings:
Don't use compressed air or powered vac pumps. Both can wreck the "can." If the lines are too messy to put in you mouth, use a straw or other tube to test.
If you suck doing 1 2 and 4 can be nasty to breath Fuel Vapors. Worse if the "can" is flooded w/ liquid fuel or "water."
If you have a "Mityvac" hand pump that have input and output port can use that but gauge on it means nothing for 1, maybe minor value for 2 and 4.
While you can use a hand pump for doing 3, you can wreck the valve easy. The valve opens w/ very little effort.

Floss/Foam filter location that you can clean or replace...


Crap mostly filling the base of the bracket...


After taking that out to clean... (Cleaner.)

$1.48 for the Wix filter at RockAuto. I didn't check for other brands at other prices.
