Need help with starter (Page 1/1)

So I have read though a lot of posts that talk in a round about way about my issue. I drove the car down the street the other day and all of a sudden it dies. When I turn the key I can hear the starter motor running but I don’t hear the click click of the bendex engaging the flywheel. Everything else works I have power, fuel pressure etc etc. So I removed the starter and tested it. No bendex coming out just motor sound. So I got a news starter and installed it. Same issue. I turn the key and hear the starter motor running but no engagement of the solenoid to activate the bendex to engage the flywheel. I then removed the new one and bench tested it and it works. So I then tried just replacing the solenoid on the other starter, bench tested it and it works. Reinstalled and still nothing. So I got under the car again and jumped the solenoid power with the starter power with my screwdriver and I can hear the click click and bendex trying to engage.

What’s wrong here? Ignition switch? Clutch pedal switch? I still need to climb under the car again and get someone to turn the key so I can confirm where the car is delivering power to the solenoid. The power to the started from the battery is good at just under 12v. To be clear there is no crank at all just the sound of the fuel pump problem no and the starter motor spinning. Could it be my bendex not engaging properly? Help needed please

When you install a new starter you must check the clearance from the starter to the ring gear? You do this by inserting different thickness starter shims where the starter bolts to the block. Insufficient clearance will not allow the starter gear to engage. If the clearance is correct you might have a cable or ground problem.

You did say your engine just stopped for no obvious reason?

See Ogre's Cave for starter problems.

So update. Starter is in. It’s turning the flywheel but no spark or ignition. I spent the day changing all electrical with spare known Working parts as it tested them. New pick up coil new ICM new coil new ignition switch on steering column. I even swapped out the Ecm with a known working one to be safe. Still nothing. It does sound stronger like it’s trying to start but no spark. I also found a bad ground that has been replaced. Right now I think my spark plugs are completely fouled from all the cranking today. So I’m going. To wait till tomorrow pull the plugs clean them and test to see if I got spark with a fresh spark plug outside the engine. Any other ideas??

If the tach filter is shorted (bad) it will disable the spark. Also if no spark, when starting, check with an LED test light across the coil primary to see if the light blinks. You need to insure that the coil is being energized.
