Removable Front License Plate Mount Option! (Page 1/2)

If you're in a state that has the cursed front license plate law, you're in luck.

Long story short, my buddy decided to replace the front bumper on his 2015 Charger and didn't want to re-install the permanent unsightly license plate bracket on it so he bought an aftermarket one that has a quick release option to remove the plate which mounts to the bottom of the bumper. I helped him install it, but before I did I played around and found that it would actually work on our cars too (at least the ones with a GT bumper), with only a slight modification to the plate bracket, drilling one of the mount holes closer on center.

It's a STO N SHO Front License Plate Bracket for a 2015-2020 Dodge Charger.

You can see the bolt on the back that is crooked, that's the one I had to drill to make it mout with all three bolts to the bumper. It's mounted on there solid, though I plan on replacing the mounting bolts with ones that actually secure it to the bumper with a nut and bolt rather than the included plastic self tapping screw bolts. They feel like they will strip if tightened too much since the bumper is kinda on the thin side on the bottom.

All in all, I'm happy with it! The plate is removable for shows, and the bracket you install on the car is barely visible when you're standing up normally looking at the car. To remove the plate, simply pull on that keyring looking thing and then pull the plate out.

Hope this comes in handy to somebody looking for a front plate mount solution! 😊

Also I would look into the specifics with the front plate laws in your state for this. For example, in washington state a front plate is required UNLESS there was no front plate location from the factory. Also nobody really cares about what you do to your car in washington state

You have to drill into your bumper to attach this? What's wrong with the GM front plate holder? That can be put on and off in a minute or two.

Yeah, you have to make three holes in the bumper, on the bottom and completely out of sight. One can even install the unit off-center if they desire. It doesn't have to be mounted where I installed it.

The premise of the Sto And Sho is to be able to remove the plate in seconds! It's awesome for a car show situation, just pull the little pin and pull the plate out.

I think most of us would agree the front license is a problem and it detracts from the look.

I made a miniature steel tubing sleeve hitch receptacle that attaches to the crosswise front frame and then comes out just under the nose of the car. From there, I used 1/2" square aluminum tubing to reach the passenger side. The design allows me to have the plate either in the center of the car or either side. Like a trailer sleeve hitch, it releases with just one pin and a locking clip. No holes were made in nose section.

I can adjust the plate up or down with no tools.

If anyone is interested I'd be glad to post more photos.

I purchased and installed a similar fold under license plate mounting bracket. Its called the Altec show and go retractable license plate holder, a hide-the-plate device.
The removable scheme shown here in this thread looks very good and well engineered but it wont work here, as takes up trunk space that is always at a premium when I take the yearly trip to Carlisle with my wife. Don't ask questions!!!! This way at the shows I just fold it under and the nose area looks nice.

The thing is, there is a factory front location - most people just remove the mount.

I've experienced no problems with the off center license plate mounting with the retractable bracket here in NJ. If there is a law for center mounting it is not strictly enforced. Also any car 25 years (or older) or one registered as a "collector car" does not require state inspection.

CA is required but unless you really piss a cop off they won't write one and if they do it's like a $10 fix it ticket. You just drive down to the police station and they look at it and sign off the ticket. I think I've had 2 of these tickets in 30 years of daily driving without one.
