gas tank and fuel pump (Page 1/1)

My car has sat parked since in 2010, so I figure the gas tank needs flushed out. I took a line off at the fuel filter and what little bit black gunk dribbled out it looked and smelled nasty.

I have dropped the old V8 out and getting ready to install a new V8. It looks like a V8 Archie swap just uses the Fiero fuel pump.

I think it would be prudent to drop the tank to clean it and install a new pump. I did a search and didn't find much info, except in the archives. Any tips or words of advice to help me with this job?

Source for a fuel pump? Any upgrades? I know on my LS1 GTO, I upgraded the pump to a Walbro. But, fuel injected engines require much higher fuel pressure than a carb feed engine.

I was looking at all the hoses that attach to the tank (filler hose, fuel line, vent hose, emissions hose that goes to the charcoal canister, and I don't know what all else). One of the hoses is blocked off with a bolt screwed into the end of the hose. Maybe a return line?

Wow what a difference a few years makes (4 to be exact) i just put my Fiero back on the road last year after parking it in 2013. I had started and ran mine at least every 6 months tho and tossed some fuel stabilizer in it once and actually dropped some more fuel in it and another point. I drained it without dropping the Tank last year it was off but not full lacquer yet.

Sorry im useless just appreciate whatever people actually follow through like i did with bringing things back out of mothballs.

I had fuel pump problems last year while I was using Holley multiport EFI and ended up replacing it twice. The final pump is an AEM Electronics 50-1000.

We are in the same boat because I'm nearly done moving away from EFI to a 4 BBL. During the EFI days I had a Holley fuel pressure bypass regulator that came with two springs, one for EFI pressures and the other for carb pressures.

I don't know if there's a low pressure pump that can be used in the Fiero tank but the high pressure pumps when used in conjunction with a bypass regulator will work. Since you already have a carb, chances are good there's a bypass regulator somewhere.

I bought the pump and regulator from Lane Automotive and like doing business with them.

Looks like a lot of folks are using the ACDelco EP381 (Cyclone 4.3 turbo) which is supposed to be good for up to 300 HP. I see some using the ACDelco EP386 too. Think I might try the Bosch 69225, but I'll wait until other people have a chance to post .

My part-time employer/FLAPS sells an aftermarket pump for the '84 that's available inside a day (from warehouse); they also sell the ACD EP386, but it's special order, so, yeah, freight and wait. Aftermarket pumps for the '88 are more plentiful and some are in store stock, but AC Delco shows me at least two pumps, one of which is the EP386. Just BTW, two days a week (part-time, right?) I wear a green shirt to work...

I had to fix the fuel sending unit, so while I had the tank out I changed out the pump. Since the N* needs 40+PSI, I used EP381 fuel pump and 25055461 larger strainer. What a difference, the car now will chirp the tires from a dead stop starting in 2nd gear (auto) which it never did before. The car had a recent new fuel pump, but it was stock and not enough pressure to properly feed the V8.

Are you going to be using a carb or injection on the new engine?
You need to select a pump of the correct pressure.

I found an archived thread where V8 Archie says to use a Fiero 4 cylinder fuel pump for a carbureted V8. Looks like the ACDelco EP386 is what I'll order.

I have found that pump was a little too high on the pressure.
I used pressure regulators that failed at least twice.
I think I ended up using a pump from an S-10 that had a carb.

Okay, after reading more posts, then sitting and thinking about it (sometimes I just sit without thinking). Not sure if it's overkill or good insurance, but I decided to use a fuel regulator. So, with the EP-386 pump, I also ordered a Holley carbureted bypass regulator (‎12-803BP). It has a range of 4.5 to 9 psi and is preset to 7 psi. I'll probably dial it back to 6 psi.

Of all those hoses, which one is the return line? I don't think a return line was used with the old engine.
