I have a 185 degree thermostat in my 3800 swap and I just finished refilling the coolant system. I have the modified Fiero filler neck with the heater hose coming off of it. I have noticed that when I start the engine cold, the temp will rise to just over 220 and then dive back down when the t-stat opens. After that it will constantly stay at about 185. It seems I have just about all of the air out of the system but if the water level is a bit low would that cause the thermostat to open later than it is suppose to thus the big heat up right at first? Thanks

Sounds like a defective thermostat. I also run a 185* unit and do not experience that phenomenon. Did you drill a 1/8" hole in the thermostat body to allow all the air to escape? ------------------ " THE BLACK PARALYZER" -87GT 3800SC Series III engine, custom ZZP /Frozen Boost Intercooler setup, 3.4" Pulley, Northstar TB, LS1 MAF, 3" Spintech/Hedman Exhaust, P-log Manifold, Autolite 104's, MSD wires, Custom CAI, 4T65eHD w. custom axles, Champion Radiator, S10 Brake Booster, HP Tuners VCM Suite. No, no hole. Before I took it down to get an alignment today I did fill it again although it didn`t need much and it worked fine. Thanks for the reply.
