88 Fiero 2.5l TBI - Injector access (Page 1/2)

Hi everyone,

I am working to get my 88 Fiero 2.5l started. Replaced the fuel pump and it still cranks but won’t start. I’ve confirmed that fuel is going as far as the fuel meter - just prior to the injector. There is power going to the injector - checked with multimeter.
There is no fuel spray, so I want to pull the injector. However, there are no videos on the net that shows the 88 version of the TBI. How do I get to the injector please? The plastic “cap” twists but does not want to lift off, and I’m afraid of forcing it.

I’m trying to remove the black “cap” directly over the injector. I’ve attached a photo.

Thanks in advance!

Visit the Ogre's Cave and check out all the information on the 700 TBI injector.

There is a metal locking plate underneath the connector to the injector, which is the entire "black part". The plate is held with a Torx screw. Loosen and remove the screw and lift off the locking plate.

Once the plate is removed you can gently pry the injector out using a small screwdriver in the "lip" around the circular part of the injector. It is only held in at that point with O rings. MAKE SURE TO RELIEVE the fuel pressure before you do this. The built-up pressure isn't enough to push it out when you remove the plate but it is high enough to spray you when you lift the injector out unless you relieve it (or have left it unpowered for a while so the pressure has dropped normally).

Pretty simple to remove.

Thanks to both of you! I was worried about damaging the "cap" - didn't realize that in the 700 series it's the top of the injector. I will remove it and check it out today. Getting injector spray is the only thing keeping the engine from running at this point.

Of all places, AutoZone has instructions on disassembly of the 700 Series TBI - but Ogre's has a much better diagram.

Thanks again!

Also, pay attention to the location of washers and O-rings. I put my 88 injector back together incorrectly and it was gushing fuel from everywhere.

I pulled it - and this is what it looks like. The screens are nasty. They look similar to the old fuel strainer in the gas tank. Looks like the bottom screens are the worst. How hard is it to clean these, or is a new injector the better way to go?

Thanks for the tip! This is definitely something that would happen to me without your warning.

You can buy a rebuild kit that contains the filter screens and new o rings. Check the injector coil for proper resistance while you have it out.

You can also temporarily put the injector in place WITH the o rings and without the screens to see if it sprays at all; if it doesn't then it might be time for a new injector.

Thank you - I will try without the screens and see if there's any spray. I appreciate the tip, wouldn't have thought of trying that!
